Michael is a chartered patent attorney and a European patent attorney who works across a range of technologies, including the chemical, mechanical and telecoms fields. He specialises in securing patent protection, along with patent infringement and validity matters.

Prior to joining Swindell & Pearson, Michael graduated with a first-class master’s degree in chemistry from Durham University. Michael also worked in an R&D role at a multinational energy and chemical company, carrying out research in the area of catalysis, gas-to-liquid technology and the synthesis of nanomaterials. Michael’s broad academic training and work in interdisciplinary sectors enables him to handle inventions in a wide array of technical fields.

Building mutual trust and long-lasting client relationships is central to Michael’s approach. Michael’s clients include SMEs, universities, and multinationals, along with start-ups new to intellectual property. Michael has significant experience handling international patent portfolios for his clients, covering European, US and Chinese markets, amongst others. With this experience, Michael can convey the complexities of the IP world in a way that clients can readily grasp and use to enhance their IP position. Michael regularly offers IP training to his clients, enabling them to effectively capitalise on new IP and avoid costly IP mistakes.

Michael has a particular interest in battery technology. He can leverage his background in chemistry and materials to help clients in this rapidly developing sector.
