Marcus recognizes that clients require intellectual property services tailored to suit their commercial goals and budgets, from bespoke solutions addressing particular business challenges to three-hundred-and-sixty degree protection for priority projects.

Marcus read Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. He stayed on to do postgraduate research in physics, before training to become a patent attorney.

Marcus has been in the patent profession for over two decades. He has worked as a patent attorney in London and Munich, and was an in-house attorney for more than 10 years at Black & Decker (now, Stanley Black & Decker). Marcus has particular experience of protecting fast-moving consumer goods with product design protection and of oral hearings before the European Patent Office. Marcus also has French and German languages.

Although Marcus’s particular technical expertise is in the fields of optics and instrumentation, he is qualified to handle a broad range of technical areas, including engineering, materials science applications and electronics. His clients include smaller start-up companies and well-established manufacturing companies.

Outside work, Marcus enjoys art and antiques, and spending time with his family. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, and is currently serving as Chairman of the Scientific Instrument Society.

“Amongst my favourite inventions are the reflecting telescope, the van Leeuwenhoek single-lens microscope, the balance spring watch and the pendulum clock. Within the space of just a decade, in the middle of the seventeenth century, these four inventions transformed our ability to observe and measure the world around us.”
